Community participation

Here, you will find a summary of the key findings for the Sports, Community Groups and Volunteering section of the Our Turn to Speak survey. This section of the survey was completed by 99 participants who selected Sports, Community Groups and Volunteering as one of three life domains that had been most affected by their experience of stigma and discrimination.

On average, 72% of participants agreed with all statements describing withdrawal from opportunities relevant to sports, community groups and volunteering because of stigma about mental health issues.

Experiences

Here, the key findings relating to perceived experiences of stigma and discrimination relevant to different types of community groups are shown. Generally, perceived experiences of stigma and discrimination were slightly higher in relation to volunteering compared with sports and other community groups.

Anticipation

Here, the key findings relating to anticipated stigma and discrimination relevant to different types of community groups are shown. Anticipated stigma and discrimination was consistently (albeit only slightly) higher in relation to community groups compared with sports and volunteering.

Withdrawal

Here, the key findings relating to withdrawal from opportunity relevant to different types of community groups are shown. Generally, withdrawal from opportunity was slightly higher in relation to community groups compared with sports and volunteering.
