Findings relating to Relationships

More than 95% of Our Turn to Speak participants reported experiencing some level of stigma or discrimination in relationships during the last 12 months.

Of the 1,320 participants who selected relationships as one of their top three most affected life domains, 54.3% reported ‘frequent’ or ‘very frequent’ experiences of stigma and discrimination in this area.

On average, 59.3% of participants said they had experienced stigma and discrimination in their relationships with friends, family, intimate partners or in their role as parents or caregivers.

On average, 61.0% of participants said they anticipated stigma and discrimination in their relationships with friends, family, intimate partners or in their role as parents or caregivers.

On average, 72.4% of participants said they had stopped themselves from participating in relationships with friends, family or partners because of stigma about mental health issues. 

61.8% said they have had positive experiences in connection with their complex mental health issues in their relationships with friends, family or intimate partners.
